Ceramic, glass, enamel, accent or colour-changing
Ceramic takes photographic artwork best and is the default for a gift. Enamel camp mugs are built for outdoors. Glass changes the design entirely, because whatever is in the mug becomes part of the background — a consideration, not a flaw.
Accent and two-tone mugs carry a second colour on the rim, the handle or the interior, which frames the printed panel rather than competing with it. The metallic finish does something similar with a reflective surface. Colour-changing mugs keep the artwork hidden until the mug is warm, so they only pay off when there is a reveal worth waiting for.
A few pieces are engraved instead of printed — one tone cut into the surface, right for a monogram and wrong for a photograph.

- The mug appears solid and dark when cold, and the surface clears as it warms, revealing the artwork underneath. It is a reveal, so it only earns its place when there is something worth revealing — a plain logo gains nothing from being hidden first.
- Can a photograph go on an engraved mug?
- No. Engraving removes material to leave one tone, which renders lettering and line art crisply and a photograph as a grey mass. Choose a printed ceramic mug for a photograph and save engraving for a name, a date or a monogram.
- Which mug suits a logo rather than a picture?
- Printed ceramic for a logo with several colours, and an engraved piece for a single-colour mark you want cut into the surface. An accent or two-tone mug frames a logo nicely. Glass is the one to think twice about, because the drink inside changes what the mark sits against.
- What is an accent mug?
